Experimental Enameling on Electroforms
A Workshop with Shana Kroiz

August 6–9, Monday through Thursday, from 10:00am–5:00pm at the Richmond Art Center.
Cost: $325 for NCEG members, $350 for non-members – materials are included

Waitlist for Shana Kroiz Workshop
Thank you to everyone who signed up for this workshop.  It filled within 2 days of making the registration information public.  There is still time to put your name on a waitlist.  To find out more about the workshop and the waitlist, please go to http://www.enamelguild.org/NCEG/activitiesExhibition-workshop2012closed.php.

Before the workshop, Kroiz will electroform 2 pieces for each student which they will enamel in the workshop. Instructions on how and what to send to Kroiz will be sent out to workshop registrants after June 1. During this workshop, participants will electroform hollow copper pieces to later be enameled. Shana Kroiz will demonstrate several experimental enameling techniques that can later be done on the forms created in this workshop. Electroforming is a great way to enamel on three-dimensional forms while keeping the weight light enough to wear the pieces as jewelry.

Native Baltimorean Shana Kroiz is acknowledged as one of the country's leading experimental enamelists and jewelry educators. Throughout her career, Shana has been involved in teaching and promoting the growth of jewelry as a recognizable art form.
Shana is currently the Special Events and Workshop Coordinator of the Maryland Institute College of Art Jewelry Center, which she founded in 1992, and where she works as an instructor and studio artist. Previously, Shana was the Director of the 92nd Street Y’s Jewelry Center in NYC.

Torch Fired Enamel DVD
Chris Hierholzer has produced a torch-fired DVD to help raise money for enamel arts education. Proceeds from the sale will go towards funding arts education. The cost of the DVD is $22.00 plus shipping. The video shows wet packed enamels with a sgraffito technique using gold or silver foil that Chris has been perfecting for the last 7 years. This process can also be sifted. A basic knowledge of enameling would be helpful. The video has been shown to several prominent enamelists and was well received. The DVD is for sale through: EnamelWork Supply Co. 1022 N.E. 68th Street Seattle, WA 98115 1-800-596-3257 1-206-525-9271 www.enamelworksupply.com

New Class!
Exploring Liquid Enamels
Saturday & Sunday 10-5pm
August 25–August 26
Instructor: Judy Stone
In the 3000-year-old history of enameling, liquid enamels are relatively new.  Originally formulated to glaze steel in the mid-19th century, they have been referred to as industrial enamels or “porcelain” enamels because they are very similar to ceramic glazes. We will use these enamels in conjunction with more standard forms of enameling on copper. They can be painted, splashed, airbrushed, and combined with all sorts of other media to add spontaneity to enameling. Students will create several test tiles that will be used to create a small wall piece. Although some basic enameling skills would be helpful, this is an entry level class.

Flying Flux’ Road Trip
By Vivian Stillwell

Serendipitously, the Flying Flux planned a road trip to see Jan Harrell’s new work, “Offerings – Gifts For The Muse”, being shown at the Mesa Arts Center, Arizona on the same weekend as the annual SNAG conference was being held in Scottsdale.  So, we had the added bonus of getting to see a bigger scope of metals, alternative materials, and yes – enamels.

When Roberta Smith, Pat Aiken, and I arrived on Thursday, May 24th, Jan Harrell and Mary Chuduk (who is featured in the Crucible exhibition at the Mesa Arts Center) both said that we needed to go to the Shemer Museum, in Phoenix, first.  The Shemer Museum?  None of us had heard of this museum.

On Friday, we drove up to this old Spanish stucco house, nestled in a residential neighborhood.  There was a large parking lot, and we could see a few sculptures sprinkled across a large lawn.  Seems Mrs. Shemer had purchased this home in 1986 expressly for the purpose of promoting the arts.  Once we stepped inside, we were greeted by three low pedestals holding large enameled platters - the work of Gretchen Goss.  Seems we were about to view “Heat Exchange: A Cross-Continental Survey of Enamel”, an international exhibition that brought 23 artists from Germany, the United Kingdom, Australia, and North America together.  The curators were Elizabeth Turrell (UK), Melissa Cameron (Australia) and Beate Gegenwart (Germany).  The show ran from May 3 – 30, 2012.

Once we saw that the exhibit was “all” enamels, we immediately called Jane Beiser, who was driving up from Tucson with her sister, Judith, and said you need to come here first (as the museum was closed Sat., Sun., and Mon.).  Then, we walked around through room after room thinking we had hit the enameling jackpot.  What a gift. What a complete surprise to walk into an exhibition that was “just” about enameling!

Shown below is just a small excerpt of the enamel work that we saw at the Shemer Museum:

Works by Gretchen Goss

"Large Red Bowl” by Agnes von Rimsha

"Notebooks-The Companions” by Beate Gegenwart

Works by Susie Ganch

"Sidewalk Spectacle” by Kathleen Browne

Works by Barbara Ryman
