Artist Statement:

"I have done metalsmithing for over 25 years working at both the large size level (garden sculpture, lamps, vessels, reliquaries) and at the small size level (jewelry and decorative objects). In 1996, wishing to bring more color into my work than was possible with patinas and anodized titanium and niobium, I began using vitreous enamels. I mostly use silver and gold cloisonné and basse taille over hand engraved silver. I especially like to design and produce men´s jewelry such as bola ties and belt buckles. I work with graphic programs on the computer as a design tool supplementing paper and colored pencils.

At first this work was for me a means of relaxation from the demands of patient care, scientific research and administration as a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of California, Irvine; now with retirement from the University, it has become a major occupation."
